Residents can breathe easy

Sebastian martin the series of fires in the schlesienstrabe in lichteneiche seems to have been cleared up: a 77-year-old resident arrested at the beginning of the week is also said to be responsible for other fires in the street. This was announced by the police prasidium of upper franconia together with the public prosecutor’s office of bamberg on thursday. In total, the woman is said to have set six fires in the street. Accordingly, at the request of the public prosecutor’s office, an order was issued for the senior citizen to be placed under arrest for arson, some of which was serious. The apparently mentally disturbed woman is in a district hospital.

In a first reaction, memmelsdorf’s mayor gerd schneider (no party affiliation) said: "it’s a great relief for me, because the residents of schlesienstrabe can now finally sleep peacefully again, even without security services."

On monday evening there was a small fire in a cellar of a multi-family house in the strabe. In this context, the 77-year-old woman had come into the focus of the investigators. A witness had alerted the criminal investigation department to the resident.

However, it was initially unclear whether the woman was also responsible for other fires in schlesienstrabe: there had already been two fires there in january with property damage. On the evening of 12. February then a fire in a cellar made a multi-family house uninhabitable. 78 residents had to be rescued by the fire department, five residents were slightly injured.

Since then, the municipality has also been looking for replacement housing for the homeless residents, who have been accommodated for the short term by acquaintances, relatives and in hotels and vacation homes. City of bamberg and municipality of memmelsdorf later appealed to the free state to open the anchor facility in bamberg. "The capacity is there", memmelsdorf’s mayor said. But the government refused (see below).

Testimonies crucial

On 14. February stood then a mullcontainer in the strabe in flames, in the evening had been set on fire in addition a wool blanket in the cellar of a present one. The police then launched an intensive investigation into the firestarter. February an investigation commission of the criminal investigation department had been formed. Police officers made checks as well as the residents. A private service had been on guard since tuesday.

The decisive factor is said to have been the tip-off from two witnesses who had seen the woman there shortly before the fire in the mull container. Due to the urgent suspicion in all six cases, the investigating judge issued the placement order against the 77-year-old woman on thursday.
