Berlin (dpa) – the handball, basketball and ice hockey leagues are working together to get spectators back into the halls.
The guidelines of the HBL, BBL and DEL are based on the framework concept of the german soccer league (DFL) and the german soccer federation (DFB). For the three indoor professional leagues, the game operation with spectators is economically necessary for survival.
THIS IS THE CURRENT STATUS
HANDBALL: the handball-bundesliga (HBL) wants to play on 1. October start to the new season – with spectators if possible. The HBL has drawn up a hygiene concept and presented it to the clubs, and talks with local authorities are already underway at some venues. Club representatives have already warned publicly that long-term games without spectators would jeopardize the sport’s business model.
BASKETBALL: the basketball bundesliga (BBL) plans to hold a fire on 6. November to start the new season. There will be different approaches at the bundesliga locations with regard to the number of spectators and the structural implementation of hygiene regulations for the admission of spectators. Each club must develop its own protection and hygiene concept. This must be approved by the relevant health authorities. Clubs can play without spectators, but must develop a site-specific hall concept to guarantee a high-quality presentation in the TV picture.
Ice hockey: the german ice hockey league wants to play on 13. November to start the new season, with spectators if possible. The league, however, has left itself a loophole. "Of course we know that the general conditions can always change in these corona times," said DEL general manager gernot tripcke. "Therefore we can only start if the authorities give us the green light and if it is economically feasible for the clubs to operate." Individual hygiene concepts are currently being drawn up, the clubs are heavily reliant on spectator income.
