Beckenbauer about low: 'of course he should continue'

Joachim low will be happy to read these messages in his winter exile in baden. Barely half a week after the 0:6 debacle in spain and an extremely heated debate about his post, the national coach is receiving more and more encouragement from german soccer bosses.

If it’s up to "emperor" franz beckenbauer, his former assistant hansi flick and other key bundesliga voices, the trend is clear: even after the historic debacle in seville, the DFB should start the european championship year 2021 with its long-term coach.

"Of course he should continue and tackle the european championship. In the end, the game will help him to gain new insights," beckenbauer, who himself became a world champion as a player and coach, told the "bild-zeitung". Director oliver bierhoff had strengthened the 60-year-old immediately after the six-goal shock against dynamic spain, but a final decision by the association about lows’ near future does not seem to have been made before the four-month break until the start of world cup qualifying in march.

When it comes to the possible succession of ex-world champion low, the name ralf rangnick comes up again and again. He is currently without a job after a failed engagement with AC milan in the summer and would be an obvious solution for a short-term release. But the 62-year-old calls the debates about low, who has a contract until 2022, a "bad habit" and remains silent on any speculation that has flared up around him in recent days.

During the RTL telethon, rangnick said in response to the question of whether he would be willing to donate: "it’s not right. We have a national coach who has done a good job so far. It is not appropriate to talk about it." On a possible offer from the german soccer federation (dfb), which will probably spend a long time coming to terms with the national team’s 90-minute disaster, rangnick said: "nobody can know that. I’ll let it come to me and I’m very excited myself."

While numerous fans and experts vehemently demand an immediate demission of the world’s most senior national coach, decision-makers in germany’s top division recommend patience and continuity. Gladbach’s sports director max eberl said in an interview with the "frankfurter rundschau" (friday): "jogi low has earned the trust from my point of view. He made the turnaround by qualifying for the european championships with a lot of young and talented players as group leader."

The fact that low is currently seen in such a negative light is also due to "an emotional bias. "At the moment, you’d rather see the half-empty glass than the half-full one. We all have a lot to do together to improve our perception again. We should see the light again," said eberl. DFB director bierhoff and president fritz keller also found it difficult to see the light recently, when the sporting disaster of seville massively exposed the weaknesses of the german team.

While low is in the autumn of 2020 as fiercely in the crossfire of criticism as never before, his ex-assistant hansi flick is enthroned at FC bayern as triple winner and bundesliga table leader. On the 0:6, flick explained: "these things are also possible in football, that you get such a beating. That’s why you have to try to draw the right conclusions."Before that, in the 14-year era of ara low, there had been a maximum of defeats with a three-goal difference – and that only twice.

The fact that flick was later able to coach the national team himself is currently not an issue for him. "As you know, i live in the here and now. That’s why these things are much too far away for me to even think about," said the coach, who is permanently challenged in everyday league life, on friday in munich. Until joachim low is back on the sidelines in march, flick has an XXL program with games in the bundesliga, the DFB cup, the champions league and the world cup to cope with.
